Before

The pictures above were taken in 2005. My home was due for some landscape work. I decided to install a small stone wall from stone that I'd collected. For the flagstone walkway I used a stone that comes from the Canadian Shield. It apparently is harder than the flagstone found locally. You can follow the stages of this project.

In May I widened the flower bed and planted perennials. I left a small strip of grass to help mark where I wanted the wall. I dug down where the wall was to go and leveled the ground in front of the wall area to make it level with the driveway. With the laser level I marked sticks to determine where the top of the wall would be. To the left of the walkway I dug the area for the base of the wall. The soil was tamped before adding crushed stone. The base of the wall was prepared to be just below the flagstone of the lowest part of the walkway. Crushed stone was slowly added in layers and tamped. The final layer was not tamped in order to allow for setting the stones in place.

The base of the step system was escavated 12" and crushed stone added to improve drainage. Rain made things a little messy but I continued on the wall. The ton of stone arrived and I was anxious to get at it but I had to delay for a couple of days to attend a kite flying event. In a couple of days the ground was dry again and I was able to proceed with the step system. It went together easily. I completed the rest of the wall after the steps were in. This allowed me to get the stones up snug against the steps.

The base for the walk was leveled and tamped. Sand was placed on top of the crushed stone to allow the flagstone pieces to be set and leveled. I measured an area on the lawn approximately the size of the walkway. I laid out the stone and was able to mix and match the shapes until I liked the combination. The wonders of digital cameras! I marked the pieces with sidewalk chalk and with the camera was able to record the layout and print it out for easy reference. The last of the flagstone was placed and playground gravel was added between the pieces.
